Important: 2026 Driver Licence Rules for Temporary Visa Holders

Warning: Rules for overseas drivers changed significantly in 2025. In most states, you can no longer drive "indefinitely" on a visitor visa. Failure to convert your licence within the timeframes below may result in "Driving Unlicensed" fines.

State Road Authority Rules for Temporary Visa Holders (Students, TSS, etc.)
New South Wales Transport for NSW The 6-Month Rule: If you arrived in NSW after July 1, 2023, you can only drive on your overseas licence for 6 months.
  • After 6 months, you must apply for a NSW "Temporary Visitor" licence (Q condition).
  • If your licence is not in English, a NAATI translation is mandatory for this application.
  • Important: If you fail a NSW driving test, your overseas driving privilege ends immediately.
Victoria VicRoads 6-Month Limit: All overseas drivers residing in Victoria (regardless of visa type) must convert to a Victorian licence within 6 months of residing in the state.
  • Your overseas licence must be accompanied by a NAATI-certified translation at all times.
  • If you fail a Victorian driving test, you can no longer drive using your overseas licence.
Queensland TMR Queensland You can drive on your overseas licence for the duration of your temporary visa, provided:
  • The licence is current and valid.
  • You carry a NAATI translation if the licence is not in English.
  • You have not been issued a QLD licence (once issued, the overseas one is invalid).
Western Australia Dept. of Transport Visitors and temporary residents can drive indefinitely as long as their overseas licence remains valid.
  • A NAATI translation or IDP is required if the licence is not in English.
  • Note: As of Nov 2025, many "Experienced Driver" countries now require a practical driving assessment to convert.

State Road Authority Rules for Permanent Visa Holders
All States (NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA) Various If you become a Permanent Resident (PR) or Australian Citizen, the rules are much stricter:
  • NSW, QLD, SA, WA, TAS: You have only 3 months to convert your licence.
  • Victoria: You have 6 months from your date of entry (or date visa was granted).
  • Requirement: You must present a NAATI-certified translation of your original licence to the service centre during your conversion appointment.
